Charleston Festival

10 days of thrilling events at the home of the Bloomsbury Group

Set in the gentle curves of the East Sussex countryside, Charleston’s pretty much unchanged since the days when it was home to the literary, philosophical and artistic big-hitters of the Bloomsbury Group in the early 1900s.

A century on, attending the Charleston Festival’s many events and talks, sitting and discussing the issues of the day and having a picnic among the trees, you can just feel their legacy.

Hornbeams

A characteristic broad-leaved tree of Sussex woodlands, the Hornbeam is recognised by its smooth, sinuous trunk and furrowed leaves. Long ago its exceptionally hard wood was used in the Weald to make charcoal for iron smelting.
